Episode 4

Literally all Ive been told about her is that she fucking sucks. But also I dont know her.
Anna, who is hopefully learning many, many lessons watching this

What a terrible episode this was. There was so much contrivance, so much nastiness. This is the kind of Bachelor episode I despise watching (and despise recapping even more!), the kind of episode that makes you want to quit this show. If it werent for this blog, I honestly would have quit the season based on this episodethats how much I hated it. Also, I tend to have a potty mouth when Im angry, so be warned that there is more swearing in this recap than usual! 😬

LAST WEEK, CONTD

Episode 4 picks up after Sarahs departure, with the women in a large Girl Chat, clearly prompted to discuss her. With the group shot (with our favorite U-formation) at the beginning of this scene, note how Katie is not yet present while MJ and Anna are talking about Sarah, yet shes suddenly there when Victoria is

First, I dont agree that Sarahs situation reflects MJs the first time things get hard argument (its obvious Sarah struggled more so because of women like MJ than because of difficulties in her relationship with Matt), but thats not the point Im making here so Ill resist picking that apart. Last week we saw Katie arrive in this same outfit, to this same chat, to tell the women Sarah had left. So, Katies reappearance act here tells us Victoria was the one to still double down and call Sarah trash after knowing shed left. Im mentioning this mainly to give MJ and Anna the benefit of the doubt, that they werent necessarily talking shit about Sarah after hearing of her departure.

Oh, and Katie is a HERO. A lot of people (and perfectly kind people!) would just be passive and silent in this situation, so for her to speak up and really stand up for someone (someone who isnt even there anymore) speaks to such a strong sense of empathy on her part, not to mention courage in taking on someone as outwardly mean as Victoria. Katie is the seasons MVP by far.

GROUP DATE #2

It would seem Sarahs departure took up much of the day because this Group Date appeared to only be an evening Cocktail Party. Add that to the list of grievances the women likely had in general: Annoyance at Sarah for (inadvertently and indirectly) causing the first Group Date to be cancelled, then further annoyance with both her and the process in general that, in lieu of a daytime activity, those second Group Date ladies instead sat around being made to talk about Sarah.

I dont have much to say about this Group Date except to mention how likable Chelsea is. I appreciated hearing her describe hair as emotional and sharing how shed chemically straightened it for as long as she could remember. This was a really lovely moment in its honesty, but I couldnt help but wish wed gotten more moments like these. Its safe to assume we were shown this because Matt would give Chelsea the Group Date rose, which leaves me wondering just how many little conversations like this are left on the editing room floor, unworthy because they dont culminate in a rose and dont involve icky drama.

Finally, I enjoyed Chelseas adorable ITM after receiving her rose

People often ask why contestants become close with producers because they seem like the obvious enemy. But ITMs like this show us why: you can tell your producer feelings youd be rude to tell your housemates. Not only can you celebrate getting the rose, but you are encouraged to.
There is an element to being on your best behavior with each production and housemates, which I think is another factor in the emotional difficulty of being a contestant on this show. You can never let your guard down completely.

ROSE CEREMONY

We all knew things would begin going horribly awry when we were shown the women saying

The night is young and calling the train youre on a positive one are not feelings production wants to induce in their contestants unless its to then pull the rug out from under them. Something about Serena C in the above clip makes me laugh, though. Her expression seems to suggest she knows how dangerous this conversation is.

Chris Harrison pulls Matt outside to drop the bomb that 5 new women will be arriving. I laughed out loud at Matts face scratch and tepid okay upon hearing a record number of women wanted to date him

He may be new to this but hes appropriately apprehensive.

So, five new women arrive. Excuse my French, but this is some tired bullshit. Not the twist itself (though we did get a glimpse of this same thing on Tayshias season), but the impact it was obviously meant to have: causing the existing contestants to officially crack and creating a clear us-against-them mentality

Of course, the above also serves as foreshadowing, because no way would new girls arrive and for not one of them get a 1-on-1 date. Everything about this gimmick is so heavy handed and predictable.

I mentioned we got a glimpse of this late arrivals twist with Tayshias season, but at least Tayshia was a new Bachelorette and therefore deserved a larger selection of menshe was meeting ALL the men for the first time that night. There was an acceptable excuse for throwing five new guys into the mix partway through the season. But this this was sooooo unnecessary. What was the reason these women couldnt have arrived on Night One like the others? No reason was given, of course. The Powers That Be didnt even pretend it was for any legitimate reason other than to incite hostility.

To be clear, this was unfair for EVERYONE. It was unfair to the existing women. It was unfair to the new arrivals. It was unfair to Matt, who then had the unpleasant task of mitigating feelings for a twist he had no say in. Further, I wouldnt be surprised if he was pressured to keep the majority of the new women, in the interest of causing even more anger among the OG women, seeing their friends go home only to be replaced by strangers.Im not even addressing Victoria because Im sick of her and her antics. As for the rest of the contestants, do I think the existing women were ruder than they needed to be? Of course. I didnt quite understand the emphasis on feeling disrespected by the new ladiesits not like those women wouldnt have arrived on Night One had they had the choice. However, just to play devils advocate, I think its very possible women expressed feeling disrespected by the SHOW, by production, by the process, and that vitriol was redirected at the other women in the edit. (We know by now this happens all the time.) But yeah, manybut not allof the women were unnecessarily unkind. Their frustration was understandable, but no amount of frustration warrants treating other innocent women like scum. And this is where I do think Victoria comes in. I mentioned last week that I think shes an enabler; she makes the women around her meaner than if she werent there.

GROUP DATE #1

Ben Higgins arrives and has planned a reasonably wholesome Group Date. As silly as squirrel costumes were, I enjoyed this date, if only because it didnt involve wedding gowns, violence, unnecessary near-nudity, or sex. (Yes, the bar is low.) I was also just impressed by these 1000-lbs pumpkins

Seriously, not nearly enough time was spent marveling at these things! How long does it take to grow one of these?? I want to know more about the sheer manpower it must have taken to prepare and transport them for this! They all seemed unique and that would surely make a difference in mobility? Was I the only one amazed by the pumpkins?!?!

Mari wins the the race. Chris Harrison awards her a trophy with acorns on it and says These nuts are yours. Sigh.

In the evening MATT with BRITTANY

In the evening, things unravel quickly. Anna had alluded to knowing so-called dirt on newcomer Brittany (as evidenced by the lovely quote of the week) but she was in need of a little push before she really ran her mouth. Queue producers, who send Brittany to claim her 1-on-1 time while Anna is chatting with Matt. (NO WAY was Brittany interrupting Anna some coincidence.)
That push was all Anna needed. She feels somehow wronged by Brittany doing what she herself would have done and has done countless times (interrupting 1-on-1 time for her own 1-on-1 time) and proceeds to declare on national television that Brittany is probably an escort

Note the sheer glee on Annas face in saying this. Remember who shes talking to: a producer who feels like a friend, and someone whos snickering along with her, egging her on, likely sharing in her disbelief. Im not REMOTELY excusing Annas behavior (more on that in a bit) but I say this as a general reminder of the circumstances which would bring Anna to share something like this in the first place.

As for what Annas actually saying. Just wow. Theres nothing I can say about this that hasnt already been said. There are so many wrongs its hard to know where to start. First, to claim on national television that someone is a sex worker is not only wrong from a ethical standpoint (its no one elses business to share), but given the stigma still surrounding sex work, its also wrong from a safety standpoint. Second, its 2021: the derogatory tone is painfully passé and just makes Anna seem sheltered and judgmental. Finally, the coup de grâce: ANNA WAS WRONG. She didnt even know for sure and STILL said this on national television! Its like a babushka doll of wrongdoings!

Now, observing the .GIF above, I find the cutaways suspect. We never SEE Anna say Brittany may be anything. Part of me wondered if this was frankenbitten, if may was used (as opposed to Brittany IS an escort or Brittany IS having a transactional relationship) potentially to protect the show from a legal standpoint (especially given how many times theyve ran these lines in their teasers). However, I couldnt detect any weird audio here, so I sadly dont have clips to back up my suspicions. But Im still suspicious!
