When did you find out Nick wanted to come back?
Harrison: When everything started to come together [with him wanting to return], we had already started production. We learned of this prior relationship that they had, and once we figured out he was in New York and we were headed there, we were like, "OK, this is where you can show up and talk to her and whatever happens, happens."

Nick shows up and Kaitlyn immediately looked smitten.
Harrison: I felt the same way. As soon as I saw her face light up when she saw him, it was over, done. Nick knew he had Kaitlyn. You could see the smug look on his face. I know she went through the proper emotions of being torn and trying to sleep on it, but it's like when you know you're going to make a purchase, it's just a matter of when. The fact that she was willing to put the guys through all that let's you know how serious she is about Nick.

'The Bachelorette': Chris Harrison Blogs Episode 4

I sat down to write my regular blog and recap this episode but the problem is this was far from a regular episode, so this will be far from my regular blog. Let’s face it, there were really two major issues that dominated this entire episode. There was the Clint and JJ relationship, and the arrival of Nick. You can really cut this season in half, life before Nick and life after Nick. For better or for worse we’re all living in a post Nick world now, people.

The episode started with Kaitlyn calling Clint aside and calling his bluff. Clint was clearly prepared to do what it took to pull one over on Kaitlyn so he could hang around one more week and spend time with his close friend JJ but Kaitlyn saw right through all his BS. I was very proud of Kaitlyn and how she didn’t fall for all the garbage he was spewing out to try to save himself. But what happened next is what was really interesting. When Clint was leaving, for some inexplicable reason a bus was backed right over him and who was the driver? None other than his close friend, JJ. The only thing more perplexing than JJ being the one to sell Clint down the river was the subsequent response and reaction from these two. JJ went to go explain himself but Clint just wasn’t having any of it. These two “friends” got nose to nose and went at it. The only thing is I honestly couldn’t tell if they wanted to kiss or kill each other.

That night I remember thinking the emotion in the room was odd and confusing. After watching it back I’m only more confused as to what I witnessed. If you didn’t understand Clint and JJ’s relationship last week, then this week certainly didn’t help to clear anything up. So Clint leaves and everybody moves on right? Wrong! JJ’s reaction that we showed you after Clint left, left me utterly speechless. His emotional breakdown after he burned Clint put a cherry on what has been the strangest relationship I’ve seen in quite some time.

After dealing with Clint and having to send yet another guy home this week, Kaitlyn decided she had just had enough. She pulled me aside to let me know she really didn’t want to have a rose ceremony at all. I told her that was fine, but that it would just delay the inevitable — the following week there would be even more guys to send home. She weighed her options, and you saw the result. I think Kaitlyn expected a big sigh of relief from the guys — but what she didn’t know was how much the guys were hoping that she’d be sending JJ home. Since there was no rose ceremony and nobody had to go home, I decided why not just tell everybody right then and there that we were leaving the house and taking this act on the road to NYC. If the guys only knew what was about to happen to them in NYC and how things would change, I’m not so sure any of them would’ve gotten on the airplane.

According to Kaitlyn before she was officially named the Bachelorette she had started talking with Nick. This might seem weird, but it happens all the time with people from different seasons. These people often look each other up and end up talking, sometimes meeting, and occasionally hooking up. So yes, Kaitlyn had some sort of friendship going with Nick before the season started. When Nick showed up at the group date, I know Kaitlyn was honestly torn as to whether she should let him stay, but it was clear to me that there was no doubt in her mind. As soon as I saw her eyes light up when Kaitlyn met Nick, I knew it was over. It was also apparent to me that Nick knew he was in. He was playing the situation perfectly; he didn’t press too hard, but just hard enough to let Kaitlyn know he was serious. It was a forgone conclusion that we were all going to be in a post-Nick world once again very soon.

Kaitlyn knew the easiest and maybe even the “right” thing to do in this case was to send Nick packing. But what is “right” in this situation? Are there rules she must follow to find love, and does everybody have to be okay with how she does it? Or does she have to do whatever it takes to find what she’s looking for, no matter what the cost? Kaitlyn knew darn well this was going to go over with the guys like a lead balloon. Turns out that was an understatement. Nick on the other hand not only didn’t care what the other guys thought of him coming in, he hoped they would “respect” it. There is no chance any of these guys were going to like this. Would they deal with it? Sure — but “respect” it? No chance.
Kaitlyn really took a massive risk of losing everything by letting Nick stay. I’m not sure she even understands today what the full ramifications of her actions were that day. The ripple effect of that one decision will be something we talk about for quite some time. The most immediate effect of “Hurricane Nick” hitting landfall was this: It almost ruined Kaitlyn’s one-on-one date with Jared. If weren’t for Jared being an over-the-top gracious gentleman and handling the situation with such class, the date would have been ruined. Jared played it like a champ and saved the night and reminded Kaitlyn that there are a bunch of great guys already here for her. Whether Kaitlyn made the right or wrong choice about Nick is up for debate, but ultimately this is her life and her journey so I respected her call. While she definitely gave it a lot of careful thought, I don’t think even she knew how big of a decision this would be and how much trouble it would ultimately cause.

Next week, the fun will really begin when Nick moves in with the guys and we roll into our next rose ceremony in NYC. The guys know that Nick’s arrival means some of them are going to be asked to leave — and he’ll gets comfy in their spot. You can imagine how well that’s going to go over. And to think the guy hasn’t even gone on a date yet! Then we pack up and head to a place near and dear to my heart: the Lone Star state. San Antonio, Texas is known for one of the most famous battles in Texas history, and the drama on next week’s episode might be one for the history books as well. See you on Monday!

Sharleen Joynt on The Bachelorette: Episode Five

I personally believe that anyone who signs up for The Bachelorette thinking—knowing!—he will be the last man standing is quantifiably insane. It’s one thing to be optimistic about “finding love” but it’s something else entirely to be delusional. After all, the odds are most definitely not in your favour. For that reason, and having been through it myself, I can confidently say that most people go on this show for the experience. It’s not that you’re not there to explore your romantic potential with the lead—you’re open-minded about that—but you’re hopefully keeping your wits about you and realizing there are two dozen others in your shoes.

That’s why I honestly don’t see the fuss about Kaitlyn letting Nick join her posse of man meat. I don’t see it as disrespectful to the men at all. How is it less disrespectful than going on a group date and kissing several of the men in the same vicinity, the very same evening? Let’s be honest, these are not normal circumstances where normal rules can be applied. It’s a wonky universe where it’s totally acceptable for the lead to be “exploring her options” while her suitors must remain loyal to only her. The richest part of all is that there are still 14 men remaining. They can’t all be the last man standing, and I guarantee you most of them know that.

We haven’t seen much of Justin so far but he did say it best at the rap date cocktail party: “With the connection that we have, and the connection you have with other guys, my gut reaction is, honestly, what’s another one? This is your journey, we’re taking part in this, if one more person is going to impede upon the connections we’re all developing—that I’m developing with you—it’s not necessarily a threat.”

The men who don’t really stand a chance never stood a chance anyway. The addition of another guy won’t change that. And I assure you, these men know who they are. (You think Corey, JJ, Joe, Jonathan, Ryan B, or Tanner actually think they’ll end up engaged to Kaitlyn? Come on.) I’m not denying their good intentions and open-mindedness and attraction to her, but their Bachelorette experience—in addition to their chances with Kaitlyn—will not be affected for the worse by the arrival of another man. Now, as for the guys who are really falling for Kaitlyn: They should want their relationships with her to be challenged. Wouldn’t you rather end up engaged to someone who had a plethora of options? Someone who had been around the block and was making as informed a decision as possible? I would never want to be with someone who was with me by default because they simply didn’t like anyone else better. Since Kaitlyn is clearly intrigued by Nick, any existing frontrunner who is really there for her (and not just there to “win”) should welcome Nick with open arms. They are all different people, after all, and not interchangeable in any way. She will end up with whomever has the most potential, and if you get bumped because of another guy, that’s information you should rather know sooner than later.

My frontrunners this week…

Nick, 34: The mere fact that Kaitlyn kept Nick spoke volumes about her attraction to—and investment in—him. (If she wasn’t interested it’s safe to say, based on her actions the last few episodes, she would have no qualms about turning him away.) Kaitlyn has gotten a lot of flak for this decision, so there’s got to be something powerful there. And frankly, that “something” seems like a whole lot of chemistry.

Shawn, 28: It’s clear Shawn feels very strongly for Kaitlyn. He’s had a laser-sharp focus on her since Night One. He took her letting Nick on the show personally, which makes him either insane or the true frontrunner. His brooding this week wasn’t lost on Kaitlyn; in general she seems very responsive to him. I’m still waiting for this one-on-one.

Jared, 26: I honestly believe this might have been the most enviable one-on-one date I’ve ever seen. The Met Museum, completely shut down for private perusing, dinner by the Temple of Dendur and a helicopter ride over New York City! Just, WOW. As for Jared, I’m into these two together. He’s bright and quick, as is she, and their time together seems effortless and full of playful banter.

Ben H., 26: Not much airtime for Ben H. this week, and one might expect Chris “Cupcake” to be on this list. However, Kaitlyn’s time with Ben H. last week was still more memorable to me than last night’s time with Chris, which felt forced and not at all romantic. (And while I did enjoy Chris’s wonderfully hammy rendition of “A Whole New World,” what was the point of auditioning with singing and dancing if the actual performance entailed no singing or dancing??) Ben H. has “one-on-one date material” written all over him, so I predict we’ll see more of him soon.

The Bachelorette's Kaitlyn Bristowe's Blogs About a Tough Call: 'It Really Did Kill Me'

These cliffhangers are really giving me some good material to work with for the beginning of my blogs!
Let's sum things up. I quit Clint. Clint quit JJ. The romance and the bromance are officially over. Short-lived, I know. There were just too many red flags with Clint. He was great on our one-on-one date but terrible in a group setting. And I really need a guy who can hang and be social in big groups of people. Clint definitely struggled with that. And no one except for JJ had nice things to say about him. Oh, how awkward was that when JJ asked Clint for an apology?! That was so uncomfortable! And then they almost got into a fight! I had heard through the grapevine that they almost came to blows, but I had no idea it was that close! Way too much testosterone. Toodeloo, Clint. At least we'll always have that drawing of Chris Harrison riding a triceratops!

Just like I didn't see Clint and JJ almost coming to blows, I don't always see or hear about everything that happens in the Bachelor mansion. Sometimes all I had to go with was my gut and my heart. Sometimes I was right. Sometimes I was wrong. When it came to Kupah and Clint, I was dead-on. But it really was a tough job trying to figure out which relationships needed more time and which relationships already had all the time they deserved. And that night it felt like all the relationships needed more time, especially after the Clint drama took up most of the night. So I took it upon myself to cancel the rose ceremony and bring all of the guys to New York City. Yeah, I broke the rules. It won't be the last time. Stay tuned for more rule-breaking later this season!
